How to choose a neighborhood

For routine visits such as a Pap smear, contraception, an STD test or a vaginal infection, the nearest neighborhood clinic is usually the most convenient and the least expensive. Seomyeon and Centum City have dense clusters of outpatient women's clinics, many open on Saturdays and some in the evening. For pregnancy care and delivery, look at areas with women's hospitals, such as Yeonsan, Gaegeum near Gaya, Haeundae's Jangsan area, Beomil and Gwangalli. For complex conditions, high-risk pregnancy or surgery, university hospitals in Gaegeum, Haeundae and the Seo-gu / Nampo side of the city offer specialist care.

Clinics, women's hospitals and university hospitals

  • Clinics (의원) are small outpatient practices, often with one to a few doctors. They are good for most everyday gynecology.
  • Women's hospitals (여성병원) usually offer prenatal care, deliveries and inpatient beds, and some provide fertility treatment.
  • University and general hospitals handle complex and high-risk cases. A referral from a clinic may lower your National Health Insurance (NHI) co-payment.

Tips for foreign patients

  • Bring your ARC or passport to every visit. NHI enrollees pay a co-payment for covered care; others pay the full fee, so ask for a price first.
  • Call ahead to confirm hours, whether you need an appointment, and whether a female doctor or English-speaking staff is available.
  • The 1330 Korea Travel Hotline offers phone interpretation.
