Vaginal odor: when to see an OB/GYN in Busan

Every vagina has its own natural scent, and it can shift with your cycle, exercise or sex. A new fishy, foul or unusually strong odor, especially with changes in discharge, itching or burning, is worth checking. Most causes are easy to diagnose with a quick swab at any OB/GYN clinic in Busan.

Common causes of vaginal odor

Odor is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The most frequent causes doctors look for are:

• Bacterial vaginosis (BV): an imbalance of normal vaginal bacteria. It often causes a thin, grayish discharge with a fishy smell that may be stronger after sex or during your period.
• Trichomoniasis: a sexually transmitted infection that can cause a frothy, yellow-green discharge, odor and irritation.
• A forgotten tampon or other object: this can cause a very strong, foul smell and needs prompt removal by a clinician if you cannot remove it yourself.
• Other factors: sweat, douching, scented products, hormonal changes around menopause and, less commonly, other infections.

Yeast infections usually cause itching and thick white discharge rather than a strong odor, which is one reason a test is more reliable than guessing.

What the visit involves

The doctor will ask about your symptoms, cycle, sexual history and any products you use. A short speculum exam lets them look at the discharge and take a swab. Many clinics can check vaginal pH and look at a sample under the microscope during the visit; others send swabs to a lab for a vaginitis or STI panel, with results in a few days. Treatment is usually a short course of oral or vaginal medicine. For BV and trichomoniasis, finishing the full course matters, and partners may need treatment for trichomoniasis.

Cost and insurance

If you are enrolled in Korea's National Health Insurance (NHI), the consultation and standard tests for symptoms are partly covered, so out-of-pocket costs are usually modest. Broader STI panels done by PCR may be partly covered or self-pay depending on why they are ordered. Without NHI you pay the clinic's full fee, so ask for an estimate when you call. Tips for foreigners

• Bring your ARC (for NHI) or passport.
• Call ahead to check hours and whether you need a booking; many clinics take walk-ins.
• Avoid douching or vaginal products for a day or two before the visit, as they can affect test results.

When to get help sooner

See a doctor promptly if odor comes with fever, pelvic or abdominal pain, unusual bleeding, or if you are pregnant. Go to an ER if you have severe pain, high fever or feel very unwell.
