What it is

The hymen is a thin, flexible rim of tissue at the vaginal opening. Its shape varies widely from person to person, and it can stretch or tear through exercise, tampon use, injury or sex. Hymenoplasty (hymen repair or reconstruction) uses fine stitches to bring remaining hymenal tissue closer together, or occasionally creates a flap from nearby vaginal tissue.

  • A hymen's appearance cannot reliably show whether someone has had sex. The WHO and other health bodies consider so-called "virginity testing" unscientific and harmful.
  • Many people do not bleed the first time they have sex, with or without surgery.
