Pregnancy Test in Busan

Whether you've had a positive home test or just a late period, a Busan OB/GYN can confirm pregnancy with a urine or blood test and an ultrasound, usually the same day. Here's how it works and what to do next.

Types of pregnancy tests

• Home urine test: sold at pharmacies (약국) and many convenience stores. Ask for 임신테스트기. Most are accurate from the day of your missed period, and more reliable a few days after. Use first-morning urine for best results.
• Clinic urine test: similar to a home test, done at the clinic.
• Blood (serum) hCG test: detects pregnancy earlier and gives a number. Two tests about 48 hours apart show whether hCG is rising as expected, which helps when pregnancy is very early or there are concerns about miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.
• Transvaginal ultrasound: confirms the pregnancy is in the uterus. A gestational sac is usually visible around 5 weeks, and a heartbeat around 6 to 7 weeks after your last period.

When to see a doctor

Book a visit once you have a positive test, ideally around 6 to 8 weeks from your last period, when an ultrasound is most informative. Go sooner if you have pain, bleeding, a history of ectopic pregnancy, or are using fertility treatment or an IUD.

What the visit involves

The doctor asks about your last period and symptoms, confirms with a urine or blood test, and usually does an ultrasound. Once pregnancy is confirmed, the clinic can issue a pregnancy confirmation form (임신확인서), which you need to apply for the government pregnancy voucher.

Cost and insurance

Consultations and medically indicated tests are generally partly covered by NHI. After pregnancy is confirmed, NHI enrollees can apply for the pregnancy and childbirth medical expense voucher : 1 million won for a singleton pregnancy, or 1 million won per fetus for multiples, usable toward prenatal care costs. Home tests are inexpensive and self-pay.

When to get help sooner

Go to an emergency room right away if you have a positive test plus severe one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding, dizziness or fainting. These can be signs of an ectopic pregnancy.
