Adenomyosis care in Busan
Adenomyosis is when tissue like the uterine lining grows into the muscle wall of the uterus, often making the uterus enlarged and tender. It commonly causes heavy, painful periods, especially from the late 30s onward. Local OB/GYN clinics in Busan can diagnose it with ultrasound, and women's and university hospitals offer the full range of treatment.

Some people have no symptoms. Adenomyosis often occurs together with fibroids or endometriosis.
How it is diagnosed
A transvaginal ultrasound can show typical features such as an enlarged, globular uterus and a thickened, uneven muscle wall. MRI gives more detail and helps tell adenomyosis apart from fibroids, which matters when planning treatment. Blood tests check for anemia.
Treatment options
- Pain and bleeding relief: NSAIDs and tranexamic acid during periods.
- Hormonal treatment: the hormonal IUD is widely used and can reduce both bleeding and pain; progestins such as dienogest, combined pills and GnRH-based medicines are other options.
- Uterus-sparing procedures: in selected cases, uterine artery embolization, focal surgical removal (adenomyomectomy), or high-intensity focused ultrasound ( HIFU ). Evidence and availability vary, and not every facility offers these.
- Hysterectomy: the only definitive cure, considered when other treatments have failed and you do not plan future pregnancy.
Cost and insurance
For people enrolled in Korea's National Health Insurance (NHI), consultations, ultrasound, most medicines and medically needed surgery are partly covered. MRI, HIFU and some procedures may be covered only under certain criteria or be self-pay, so ask the hospital how it bills. Without NHI you pay the full fee. Adenomyosis questions
What is the difference between adenomyosis and endometriosis?
In adenomyosis the lining-like tissue grows into the muscle wall of the uterus. In endometriosis it grows outside the uterus, for example on the ovaries or pelvic lining. They can occur together and cause similar symptoms.
Does adenomyosis go away after menopause?
Symptoms usually improve after menopause as estrogen levels fall. Many people use medicine or a hormonal IUD to manage symptoms until then.
Can I get pregnant with adenomyosis?
Many people do, though adenomyosis may be linked to lower fertility and some pregnancy complications. If you are trying to conceive, talk to your doctor about treatment choices that preserve fertility.
Is HIFU a good option for adenomyosis?
HIFU is a non-invasive option some hospitals offer for selected cases. Results vary, evidence is still developing, and not everyone is suitable. Ask about alternatives, expected results and costs.
