What sexual health care covers

In Korea, women usually see an OB/GYN (산부인과) rather than a general practitioner for sexual and reproductive health concerns. Most clinics can handle:

  • STD testing for chlamydia, gonorrhea, Mycoplasma, ureaplasma, trichomonas, syphilis, HIV and herpes, using swabs, urine and blood tests
  • Vaginal infections such as bacterial vaginosis, yeast infections and other causes of vaginitis
  • Urinary tract infections with urine testing and antibiotics
  • HPV testing and genital wart treatment , often combined with cervical screening

When to go

  • Changes in discharge, odor, itching or burning
  • Sores, bumps or a rash in the genital area
  • Pain when urinating, or needing to go urgently and often
  • A new partner, a partner with an STI, or unprotected sex
  • Before stopping condoms, or before an IUD insertion

What a visit looks like

You register at reception, fill in a short questionnaire, and see the doctor. Most visits include a brief pelvic exam with a swab, and sometimes a urine or blood test. Some results are ready the same day; PCR panels and blood tests often take a few days. Prescriptions are filled at a pharmacy near the clinic.

Cost and insurance

Consultations and tests for symptoms are generally partly covered under National Health Insurance (NHI). Screening without symptoms and large multi-pathogen PCR panels are often self-pay, and prices differ between clinics. Ask for a quote before testing; the STD test cost guide explains what drives the price.

Free HIV testing

According to Busan Metropolitan City, all 16 district and county public health centers (보건소) offer free HIV testing, and anonymous testing is available. See the HIV test page for details.

Tips for foreigners

  • Bring your ARC or passport. If you are enrolled in NHI, it is applied automatically.
  • Call ahead to check walk-in hours, Saturday hours and whether a doctor speaks English. The 1330 hotline can interpret.
  • Medical records are confidential; results are given to you directly.
  • Partners should also be tested and treated for STIs.

When to get help sooner

See a doctor promptly for fever with pelvic pain, pain during sex, or painful sores. Go to an emergency room for severe abdominal pain, heavy bleeding, fever with back pain, or if a high-risk HIV exposure happened within 72 hours (ask about PEP).

  • Can foreigners without NHI get tested?

Yes. You pay the self-pay rate. Bring your passport and ask for a quote before testing.

Busan's district public health centers (보건소) offer free HIV testing, and anonymous testing is available. Call your local center to confirm hours.

  • Will my results be kept private?

Yes. Medical records in Korea are confidential, and results are given to you directly.

  • Should I see a urologist or an OB/GYN for a UTI?

Either can treat a simple UTI. Many women go to an OB/GYN, which can also check for vaginal infections or STIs that cause similar symptoms.
