Same-Day STD Testing in Busan
Some STD tests can give an answer during your visit, while others need a lab and take a few days. Knowing the difference helps you choose the right clinic and set realistic expectations.
What can be tested the same day
- Microscopy and pH of a vaginal swab, which can identify bacterial vaginosis, yeast and sometimes trichomonas during the visit.
- Rapid blood or finger-prick tests for HIV and syphilis, offered by some clinics, with results in a short time.
- Urine dipstick for urinary tract infection signs.
- Visual diagnosis of genital warts or typical herpes sores.
What usually takes longer
- PCR panels for chlamydia, gonorrhea, Mycoplasma, ureaplasma and trichomonas, typically a few days; some clinics offer faster turnaround
- Standard lab blood tests for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis
- Cultures for recurrent yeast or UTIs
- HPV tests and Pap smears
A same-day positive rapid result for HIV or syphilis is a screening result; it always needs a confirmatory lab test before diagnosis.
When same-day testing makes sense
- Clear symptoms you want treated straight away
- Short stay in Busan or limited time to return
- Peace of mind after a possible exposure, with the understanding that very early tests can miss infection
Timing matters more than speed
Even the fastest test cannot detect an infection too soon after exposure. Swab tests are most reliable from about 1 to 2 weeks after exposure, and blood tests for HIV and syphilis may need several weeks. A doctor may recommend testing now and again later. If an HIV exposure happened within 72 hours, go to a hospital emergency room and ask about PEP.
Cost and insurance
Tests for symptoms are often partly covered under National Health Insurance (NHI). Rapid tests and multi-pathogen panels requested for screening are frequently self-pay, and prices differ between clinics. Ask for a quote and which results will be ready that day. See the STD test cost guide .
Tips for foreigners
- Call ahead and ask specifically: "Which results can I get today?"
- Bring your ARC or passport. The 1330 hotline can help interpret.
- Ask how lab results will be sent if you leave Busan.
- Free HIV testing, including anonymous testing, is available at Busan's public health centers (보건소), though results may not be same-day.

Same-day STD test FAQ
Can I get chlamydia and gonorrhea results the same day?
Usually not; PCR tests typically take a few days. Some clinics offer faster processing, so ask when you call.
Are rapid tests accurate?
Rapid tests are useful for screening, but they can miss very recent infections and positive results need confirmation. Your doctor will explain what your result means.
Can I be treated on the same day?
Often, yes. If your symptoms and quick tests point to a likely cause, the doctor may start treatment before lab results come back.
Is same-day testing more expensive?
It can be, as rapid kits are often self-pay. Ask for prices for each test before you agree to them.
