Vaginal Swab Tests in Busan

A vaginal swab is one of the most useful tests in women's health. With one quick sample, an OB/GYN can check for common infections and many STIs. Here is what a swab can detect and what to expect during the visit.

What a swab can detect

• Microscopy and pH : bacterial vaginosis, yeast and sometimes trichomonas, often during the visit
• PCR panel : chlamydia, gonorrhea, Mycoplasma genitalium, ureaplasma, trichomonas and, on some panels, herpes and Group B strep
• Culture : identifies yeast or bacteria and which medicines work, useful for recurrent infections

A cervical sample for a Pap smear or HPV test is collected in a similar way but is a different test. Blood tests are needed for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis.

When you might need one

• Unusual discharge, odor, itching or burning
• Bleeding after sex or between periods
• A new partner, or a partner with an STI
• Before an IUD insertion or gynecologic procedure
• Symptoms returning after treatment
• Certain tests during pregnancy

What the visit involves

You lie on the exam chair, and the doctor gently inserts a speculum and wipes a soft swab inside the vagina or on the cervix for a few seconds. It may feel like pressure but should not be painful; tell the doctor if it is. Some clinics offer self-collected swabs for certain tests. The whole process takes a few minutes.

How to prepare

• Avoid sex, douching, tampons and vaginal creams for a day or two if possible
• Book outside heavy menstrual days
• Note when symptoms started and any treatments tried

Results

Microscopy results may be given before you leave. PCR and culture results usually take a few days; ask how the clinic will contact you.

Cost and insurance

Swab tests ordered for symptoms are generally partly covered under National Health Insurance (NHI). Extended PCR panels for screening are often self-pay. Ask which organisms are included and the cost before testing; see the STD test cost guide .

Tips for foreigners

• Bring your ARC or passport. Call ahead about English-speaking staff (1330 can interpret).
• If you prefer a female doctor, check the clinic listings or ask when booking.
• Ask for a printed copy of PCR results.

When to get help sooner

See a doctor promptly for discharge with fever, pelvic pain or pain during sex, or any new symptoms in pregnancy. Go to an emergency room for severe abdominal pain or heavy bleeding.
