Pregnancy Termination in Busan: What to Know

This page sets out the facts about ending a pregnancy in Korea: the current legal situation, how to start, what a consultation involves and what affects cost. Rules and clinic policies differ, so confirm the details directly with the clinic.

The legal situation in Korea

In 2019 Korea's Constitutional Court ruled that the criminal ban on abortion was unconstitutional. The ban lapsed at the end of 2020. Lawmakers have not yet passed replacement legislation, so there is no national framework setting gestational limits, waiting periods or standard procedures. In practice:

  • Whether a clinic offers termination, and up to what stage of pregnancy, is each clinic's own policy.
  • Termination is not covered by National Health Insurance (NHI), so fees are set by each clinic.
  • Medication abortion pills (mifepristone/misoprostol) were still under regulatory review in 2026 and had not been approved for sale. Pills bought online are unregulated and may be unsafe or fake.

First steps

  • Confirm the pregnancy and how far along it is. An OB/GYN will do an ultrasound, and sometimes a blood test, to date the pregnancy and check it is in the uterus. See Pregnancy Test .
  • Call clinics directly. Ask whether they provide termination, their gestational limit and the total fee, including tests, anesthesia and follow-up.
  • Take time to decide if you need it. A good clinic will explain all your options, including continuing the pregnancy, without pressure.

What the procedure usually involves

In the first trimester, clinics in Korea typically use a short surgical procedure (vacuum aspiration), often under sedation. It is usually done as a day procedure. You'll need someone to accompany you home if you are sedated. Later procedures are more complex, and fewer clinics provide them. A follow-up visit is recommended to check recovery and discuss contraception.

Cost and insurance

Because it is self-pay and unregulated, prices vary widely between clinics and rise with gestational age and sedation. Ask for an itemized quote before booking. The confirmation ultrasound and consultation may also be charged separately.

Tips for foreigners

  • Bring your ARC or passport. Clinics require ID.
  • Ask whether the doctor can explain consent forms in English. Otherwise use 1330 for phone interpretation.
  • Records are confidential. Adults do not need a partner's or family member's consent under current practice, but clinic policies vary, so ask.

When to get help sooner

Go to an ER right away for heavy bleeding (soaking more than two pads an hour for two hours), fever, severe abdominal pain, foul-smelling discharge or fainting, whether during pregnancy or after a procedure.
