IUD Removal in Busan
Whether your IUD has reached its expiry date, you want to try for a baby, or you're having side effects, removal is usually a quick office visit. Here's what to expect at a Busan OB/GYN and what it may cost.
When to have an IUD removed
- It has reached the end of its approved lifespan. This differs by type and brand, so check your insertion record.
- You want to get pregnant. Fertility returns quickly after removal.
- You have side effects you don't want to live with, such as heavy or painful periods with a copper IUD.
- It has shifted out of position, or a pregnancy has occurred with the IUD in place. See a doctor promptly if so.
- After menopause. Your doctor will advise on timing.

What the visit involves
- The doctor uses a speculum, as in a Pap smear, finds the strings and gently pulls the IUD out. It usually takes a minute or two.
- Most people feel a brief cramp. Taking ibuprofen beforehand can help.
- Many clinics do a quick ultrasound before or after to check position.
- If the strings can't be seen, the doctor will locate the IUD by ultrasound and may use a thin instrument to retrieve it. Occasionally this needs a hysteroscopy or referral to a hospital.
Before you go
- If you don't want to get pregnant, use condoms or avoid sex for 7 days before removal, unless you're getting a new IUD straight away. Sperm can survive several days.
- Bring any record of the IUD type and insertion date, especially if it was inserted abroad.
Cost and insurance
Removal for medical reasons may be partly covered by National Health Insurance (NHI). Removal purely for contraceptive reasons, and any new device, are often self-pay. Clinics price this differently, so ask for the total when you call. See our IUD cost guide .

When to get help sooner
See a doctor promptly if you can't feel your strings, can feel the hard plastic of the IUD, or have a positive pregnancy test with an IUD in place. Seek urgent care for fever, severe pelvic pain or foul-smelling discharge, which can signal infection.
